There are some patches of cloud but they are small and widely scattered. The clouds are supposed to build through the day and there is a possibility, though small, of some rain this afternoon.

I see two main spots side by side, surrounded by penumbra, and an arc of three smaller spots preceding them and a little bit higher on the disc. Very nice.

When I went outside this evening there were some breaks in the clouds and it was bright to the west so I decided to go downtown to try to see the crescent Moon and Mercury. The weather got worse and I finally left before the sun set with heavy overcast out to the west.

The only visible sunspot group is too complex for me to get a count of the spots through the moving clouds so I just appreciated the view.

My memory of the location of the group does not agree with the disc orientation I see in Helio and I don’t know if my memory is faulty of if I am using the program improperly.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
