This morning I finished reading 1634: The Galileo Affair, by Eric Flint and Andrew Dennis. I saw this book, which is supposed to be an alternative history, one day when I was browsing Barnes & Nobles and subsequently borrowed it from the library thinking I would learn more about Galileo’s trial by the Inquisition. After reading over 500 pages I finally came to the meat of the Galileo stuff. The trial is covered in eight pages and a good part of that is the intrigues of the Committee of Correspondence who are there to spring Galileo. At nearly 700 pages it is a longer book than I like and ended up not being what I was hoping for. I also jumped into the middle of the story since this is the third book in the Ring of Fire series so I was playing catch up all the way.

I was trying to observe through thin spots in the cloud so it took a while for a thin enough spot to pass by that I could see the spots.

I could see two small spots and there may have been some even smaller spots behind the main spot but it was only a hint of something through the moving clouds and may not have been anything at all.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
