21 December 2006

Today is Winter Solstice so we are supposed to see the Sun aligned with the McGraw-Hill Sun Triangle. But we can't see the Sun today. When last I checked there wasn't even a bright spot in the sky where the Sun is hiding. They are saying conditions will get a little better this evening so maybe I will be able to find Venus and the first crescent Moon, but I am not holding my breath.

Venus appeared above the dock piling just where I left it yesterday. It was about five minutes after I found it in the binocular before I found it naked-eye.

Planetarium says the first crescent Moon is 4.64° from Venus and my binocular says the FoV is 7° so the two objects should have appeared fairly close but it wasn't until I scanned left a bit that I ran into the Moon.. I thought I saw a crescent of lighter cloud where I anticipated the Moon appearing at 1615 EST and several times after that but am not sure if it was really the Moon, or the clouds reflecting light, or my mind seeing what I wanted to see. When I did see it it was unmistakable. The limb was illuminated between 1:30 and 6:00.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
