There was a later of smog just above the horizon that we could see illuminated orange by the Sun as we approached the eastern tip of the North Fork of Long Island. As the Sun was rising through this area you could see banding across the disk. There was lots of boiling initially but it settled down some as the Sun rose higher. Conditions were still not great when I made my last observation.

This was a great sunrise even though we didn't see the green flash. The top limb of the Sun exploded on the horizon and rose quickly until the disk was 1/3 to 1/2 revealed then it seemed to slow. This was an illusion as was much else that was seen this morning. As the Sun continued to rise I observed it both directly and through the filtered binocular and it didn't get narrower after the center of the disk was above the horizon. It appeared as a tower of light extending up from below the horizon with a rounded top, like a big water tank. Eventually the bottom part of the disk began to pinch off and the disk became reflected off the surface of the water, upside down, giving the appearance of an analema. When the bottom limb cleared the horizon the reflection off the water persisted for a period of time. |

I identified four spots in this group, one more than Peter saw. They are all in close proximity and mostly faint. The entire group is on the small side.

We saw a lot of animals on this trip, most of them dead in or along the side of the road. They were primarily deer and raccoons. We did see a small deer grazing in a field adjacent to some standing corn stalks. At one point a bald eagle was flying with us off to the side of the road.
