I have started building a magnetometer based on instructions found in the Sep06 Sky at Night. They say the design has been used by the British Astronomical Association with success to predict good Northern Lights nights. It is based on a bar magnet with attached mirror suspended in a jar. A light is reflected off the mirror and onto a scale two meters away to show changes in the earth's magnetic field.
