CommentsWhile walking to the subway I saw the moon up in the western sky and, having to wait for the train, dug out my binocular to observe it from the swaying train platform. The rotation of the Moon this late as it was setting took a little getting used to. I could see maria naked-eye but couldn’t figure out which ones they were.

Still waiting for the train I turned around about 180° and tried to observe the Sun. The subway platform was swaying so much that I couldn’t tell anything about sunspot group 904 in my little binocular.

Space Weather is still showing group 909 and Active solar region is showing both 907 and 909 and is calling 904 908. All I see is 904/908. The spot appears to have leapt forward across the disc and still appears farther away from the equator than when it first rotated back onto the face of the Sun.

With the small binocular I can only detect one spot in the group. I can still detect penumbra.

[13Sep06: I found out today that they are baking out the SOHO CCD and there are no updated images to be posted on the Space Weather site. The SOHO site has a map with all the spots labeled but there are so many labels that they overlap and I can't read them so don't know for sure what number I should be using for that big spot.]

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
