31 August 2006

Observing LocationPSC
Observational Period1145-1215 EDT
Atmospheric ConditionsThe weather is lousy around here. It is totally overcast and feels moist. It sounds like Ernesto is going to track up the east side of the Appalachians and we are due for a wet holiday weekend with clouds and rain throoughout.

CommentsI had given up on observing today but when I went outside there were parts of the buildings that were lighter than others and I could see the Sun through the haze so went back and got my binocular and solar filter and went up to the oval to take a look. It was like looking at a light bulb through parchment paper that was being moved in front of it. I couldn’t make out any spots at all although I see that groups 905 and 906 are both there although they are approaching the western limb and are small.

Observing LocationScience, Industry, and Business Library, Madison Ave @ 34 St, New York, NY
Observational Period1300-1315 EDT
Atmospheric ConditionsWhen I got downtown I noticed distinct shadows, what is called cloudy-bright in photography parlance. I decided to give it one more try in case the clouds had thinned out.

CommentsThere is still nothing to be seen. The limb of the sun looks like it is an octagon with flattened sides.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
