There is an article in the BBC science news today saying that the US government is proposing the elimination of leap seconds after December 2007. This will make keeping time with atomic clocks easier. But it will also mean that clock time will increasingly drift away from mean solar time which will be bad for astronomy. The article is located (at least today) at

CommentsI had wanted to take my tripod out to try using it as a monopod to see what would be the minimum equipment that I would need to see 812. But it was getting too late for me to fool around and still make it downtown for my meeting tonight so I just took the binoculars. It was just as well because I had to wait several times until the sun poked through holes in the clouds. Then my IS batteries died. There were some very nice views of the clouds through the binoculars and they moved in front of the sun at different speeds and in different densities and shades of gray and white.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
