2 May 2005

It is cloudy and breeze today. There will be no observing I have looked up the specifications for my telescope to see what I am getting.
Specifications
Aperture107.95mm (4.25")
Focal Length432mm
Focal Ratiof/4
Theoretical Values
Maximum Magnification216x
Limiting MagnitudeMag. 12.7
Resolving Power1.2"

Thinking about eyepieces I have looked in the Orion catalog (because I have it) and picked out their Epic line. Although it is one of their more expensive lines I chose this line because they have a long eye relief (20mm) so they will be good for afocal photography, a fairly wide apparent field of view (55º), and the line is parfocal so there will be minimal refocusing on changing lenses. Keeping in mind that I have binoculars of 7x, 8x and 15x, I have selected the following eyepieces as my likely choices along with a 2x Barlow lens.

12.3 mm35x1.57º70x0.78º

The 12.3mm and Barlow will likely be the first lenses purchased to get me up and running.
I am not married to Orion or to this particular line of eyepieces. I would consider anything else with similar specifications, equal or better quality, and at about the same price point. I am buying these eyepieces with a view to being able to use them on any future scope(s) I buy so don't want to get something that may limit me later.

Disclaimer
This is my personal record of my astronomical observations. It was written for my personal reference. The only reason it is in a blog is that a blog is a very convenient way to get the records formatted more or less uniformly and they will, hopefully, have greater longevity at Google where the servers are backed up than on my hard drive which never gets backed up. I occasionally include copyrighted material in my posts. I do this to make it convenient for me to access things I think I might want to refer to again. I think of this like making a photocopy of something I read that I put in a file where I can find it when I want it. As I understand copyright law, as explained in the DVD series Copyright Compliance by Chip Taylor Communications, this use is allowed under the Fair Use doctrine since I am not making any money on this blog, I don’t publicize the blog, and only occasionally post small excerpts of copyrighted works.
